BOX SPRINGS

A box spring is a type of bed  base typically consisting of a sturdy wooden frame covered in cloth and containing springs. Usually the box-spring is placed on top of a wooden or metal bed frame that sits on the floor and acts as a brace. The box-spring is usually the same size as the much softer mattress that is placed on it. Working together, the box-spring and mattress (with optional bed frame) make up a bed. It is common to find a box-spring and mattress being used together without the support of a frame underneath, the box spring being mounted directly on casters standing on the floor.
The purpose of a box-spring mainly lies in the trade-off between ventilating the bed through the bottom and structural stability of the box-spring itself, elevating the mattress above the ground, increasing the ease of getting into bed and getting out of, providing ventilation and allow body moisture to escape, preventing mildew and creating a relatively flat and firm structure for the mattress to lie upon
The first rectangular spring-cushioned wire frames to support mattresses did not have wood rims or cloth covers. These were called bedsprings. With the increasing height of mattresses, manufacturers now make box springs in different heights so that the mattress and box spring pair maintain a standard height. Standard "high profile" box springs are 9 inches (23 cm) in height, whereas "low profile" box springs are between 5 and 5.5 inches (13 and 14 cm). Changing the thickness of the box spring and mattress require revisions to the mattress and box spring coil stiffness. This is often why box springs and mattresses are matched and sold in pairs.

Materials Box Springs Are Made Out Of

Most box springs are made out of wood, metal, or a metal-like substitute. All box springs used to be made of wood. The wooden box springs are lighter than metal ones, so they are easier to move around. Their slats are usually adjustable. Metal box springs are more durable than wooden ones. The slats in metal box springs are usually attached to the frame. Thus, they are unadjustable. Some box springs may have plastic parts. There are still no box springs that are completely made of plastic though.

Types Of Box Springs

There are different types of box springs. There is the traditional box spring with springs. There is also the foundation that has no springs. You already have an idea of the five types of box springs mentioned here. Those are the basic ones. There may be newer box springs that can be based on those basic five. Examples include the split box springs and the flexible box springs.

Traditional Box Spring:  A box spring is a support on which you put a mattress. A traditional box spring has a frame that can be made of wood or metal. This frame is filled with metal springs or a metal grid, hence the name, “box spring”. This type is no longer common today though. Modern mattresses no longer need the support from springs, making springs unnecessary. Most box springs no longer have springs inside the frame. This type is call a mattress foundation, which is the next one on this list.

The Foundation: The foundation style box spring is a box spring that has no springs inside the frame. This is the most common box spring today. It is simple to make and easy to transport.

Low-Profile Box Spring: The low profile box spring is a box spring that is lower than 7 inches, which is the usual height for box springs.

Ultra-low Box Spring: The ultra-low profile box springs are the thinnest. These box springs are usually just a bunkie board made for all sizes of mattresses.

All-in-One Box Spring: The all-in-one box spring is a foundation with no springs but it has a frame and legs. It earned the name “all-in-one” because it doesn’t need a metal frame to hold the box spring. 

 Box Spring Thickness

The box spring thickness can come in many different kinds. The standard thickness of a box spring is 7 inches, but, there are box springs that go lower and higher. The thickness can range from 3 inches to 12 inches. The box spring thickness will depend on the mattress thickness. And the mattress thickness depends on the need of the person using it. Thus, it all comes down to the needs of the user.

You may want a split king mattress with a split king box spring if you prefer two comfort levels. But there are single mattresses with two different comfort levels.

It can be used as a single bed that is paired with a twin XL mattress. Two twin XL box springs can also be used for a single king mattress. Some people with a king-sized mattress prefer to get two  twin XL box springs instead of a single king box spring.

QUEEN BOX SPRING

Knowing the queen size is unbeatable, it’s no wonder that this mattress is the most popular on the market. The Queen size mattress provides plenty of room for a couple to sleep soundly without feeling cramped or claustrophobic.The queen box spring measures 60 inches by 80 inches, and fits a single queen mattress. Many queen box springs can be dissembled and reassembled for easy movement. There are some wooden box springs, though, that are made of a single piece and cannot be removed. However, these kinds are harder to move around with.

You can still find a full XL box spring, though it may not be as quickly as the smaller sizes. This size is good for people who need or want more space in bed. The Full XL size is 6 inches longer than the normal Full, making it a perfect choice for taller individuals sleeping alone. It would also fit great in a guest room where you usually want a nice and affordable mattress.

The twin box spring is a single box spring that measures 38 inches by 75 inches. It pairs with a twin mattress. Twin size is often the next steps for children who have outgrown their cribs. It is also a good option for smaller bedrooms like Guest Rooms. Bunk beds also traditionally come in Twin size. Thus, the twin size is among the most common so it can be easy to find both a mattress and a box spring.
